The Journey So Far;
My art journey, (and the journey of self expression) begins with swimming.
Like art, I was instructed in the basics of swimming as a child, but not much more than that. At 32, I decided to attempt a triathlon (peer pressure from my brother). I started training in all 3 disciplines (swimming, biking and running), but fell in love with swimming. I received coaching on my technique, and developed workouts to improve my strength and technique. I set and met goals, increased intensity over time, and learned how to overcome mental road blocks as well as push through plateaus in my fitness. I moved beyond pace and time limits that I had built in my head. After 7 years of improvements, I challenged myself to accomplish something that would test how far I’d come as a swimmer. A 10k swim across the width of Bear Lake. A beautiful blue-green lake that straddles the border of Utah and Idaho. Accompanied and supported by my brother (slash coach slash best friend) I swam 6.5 miles through the clear turquoise waters of the lake of so many child memories, proving to myself that limits only exist in the mind.

On to the painting!
It dawned on me after that swim… if I could spend 8 years learning an almost entirely new skill, and become not just good.. but pretty damn good, I could do that with anything. It didn’t matter if I was the best, what mattered was that it made me happy. Art makes me happy, so why not do with art, what I did with swimming, and see just what I can do. I scheduled painting time the same way I scheduled in swim time. I embrace the suck. I learn and improve, and I stay present in the process. I love sharing my art with my family, and my friends.
